Eric Emerson is the sixth director of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and State Historic Preservation Officer. During the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, he served as chair of the South Carolina Civil War Sesquicentennial Advisory Board and authored a number of articles regarding the commemoration. He currently serves on the National Historic Publications and Records Commission and a number of other state and national boards and committees.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., he holds a BA in history from UNC-Charlotte and a MA and PhD in history from the University of Alabama. He began his career in public history as editor of the South Carolina Historical Magazine and later served was executive director of the South Carolina Historical Society and the Charleston Library Society. He has edited three annotated editions of Civil War letters published by the University of South Carolina Press and is the author of Sons of Privilege: The Charleston Light Dragoons in the Civil War(USC Press, 2006).
