IN-PERSON ROTARY: Dr. Forest Mahan, President of Aiken Technical College
April 26 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
New Welding Lab & returning to the workforce.
Dr. Forest Mahan became President of Aiken Technical College in 2016, becoming the College’s fifth president since it opened in fall of 1972. Founded in 1972, Aiken Technical College is a public, two-year comprehensive college with a campus spanning 104 acres, and nearly five decades of educational service to its community in Graniteville, South Carolina. ATC provides college credit programs in health, public service, business, industrial engineering and computer technology to more than 3,200 enrolled students annually. In addition, ATC serves another 10,000 participants in non-credit and continuing education programs each year.Dr. Forest E. Mahan stepped into his new role as fifth president of Aiken Technical College on July 1, 2016, after serving 8 years at Northeastern Technical College in Cheraw as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Services and Vice President of Academic Affairs, and 12 years with Orangeburg Technical College prior to that. Mahan received his Bachelor’s Degree from College of Charleston, before obtaining his Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from University of South Carolina.
Dr. Mahan brings over 20 years of experience in the technical college sector with him to his new position. Dr. Mahan commented, “My ambition was always to continue to grow personally in my field and become president of a technical college one day. I started as an instructor, and then served as a dean before moving into administration. I’ve officially been president for 91 days today, and am even more excited now about this opportunity. Aiken Technical College is in a great location and just the right size; not too small and not too large. In addition, the demographic we serve is one third Baby Boomers and two thirds Millennials. This is an ideal mix of older and younger talent and knowledge that allows us to continue to meet the needs of our community. I’m here to build upon a strong foundation that has already been laid down, and give the staff what they need to continue to succeed.”
ATC is one of 16 colleges that make up the South Carolina Technical College System, a statewide network run by the SC State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education focused on the promotion of economic and human resource development for the state. Aiken’s “Start Here…..Succeed Anywhere” college is a strong advocate for technology, making significant investments in new facilities and training programs to meet new workforce demands in aerospace, aviation and biotechnology over the past decade.
