IN-PERSON ROTARY: Dr. Marjorie Jenkins of Greenville Medical School

Dr. Jenkins serves as the Dean of UofSC School of Medicine Greenville and as Chief Academic Officer for Prisma Health-Upstate.
In 2015, Dr. Jenkins was invited to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Women’s Health (FDA OWH) in 2015 via an Interprofessional Agreement with Texas Tech University Health Science Center. Within FDA OWH, Dr. Jenkins led, and disseminated research, education and health policy initiatives across the agency, and other federal and academic environments. Her past academic appointments include tenured Professor of Medicine, Associate Dean for Women in Medicine and Science, Founding Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer for the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health, and held the J. Avery Rush Endowed Chair for Excellence in Women’s Health Research. Dr. Jenkins also served as Director of the Johns Hopkins Master in Education for Health Professions graduate student research program.
An academic and program innovator, Dr. Jenkins cultivated research and education programs across TTUHSC and nationally. She led efforts to develop and implement sex and gender inclusion models and creation of interprofessional educational resources within US medical education which have been adapted and utilized within Schools of Medicine at Mayo Clinic, Brown and Rush Universities among others. She help launch the U.S. Sex and Gender Medical Education Summit which has doubled in size and now attracts national and international faculty. As the Founding Director, she successfully steered TTUHSC’s Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health to growth and expansion across five TTUHSC campuses and five professional schools. At Johns Hopkins she led efforts to increase capacity and align resources within the Master in Education for Health Professions Capstone Research Program.
Nationally, Dr. Jenkins has participated in a variety of scientific positions, such as Chair of the first US Sex and Gender Medical Education Summit, expert/scientific reviewer for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). She has served on several scientific journal editorial boards. Dr. Jenkins has delivered more than 150 presentations to professional and public audiences and co-authored numerous works in both the scientific and public arena. Her most recent scholarship endeavor is the development of a textbook for Elsevier Publishers, Sex and Gender Impact on Clinical Care: An Expert Guider for Clinicians, slated for release in 2020.
Dr. Jenkins has served in a variety of national roles such as Program Chair of the 2015 and 2018 National Sex and Gender Health Professional Education Summits, Co-Chair of the Reproduction Workgroup of NASA’s Decadal Review, USMLE Women’s Health National Board of Medical Examiners Writing Group, HRSA expert panel advisories and NIH expert panels. She has been interviewed for consumer media such as Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, and Today.com and served as an expert consultant to 60 Minutes for a segment on sex and gender implication on health. Dr. Jenkins has been honored through numerous awards such as the American Medical Women’s Association Elizabeth Blackwell Award, the Women’s Health Congress Award for Public Policy and Advocacy in Women’s Health, the Cedars Sanai Linda Joy Pollin Advancing Women’s Heart Health Leadership Award and recognized multiple times as a Texas SuperDoc.
In addition to her academic accomplishments, Dr. Jenkins remains a dedicated clinician who has provided personalized care to thousands of men and women throughout her medical career. She and her husband, Steve Jenkins, have three children, Katharine, Matthew and Rebecca.
