ROTARY MEETING: Kathy Cunningham, 150th Anniversary of Aiken County
August 23, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
On March 10, 1871, a South Carolina legislative act to form a new county was signed by Governor Robert K. Scott. This new county was cut from portions of Barnwell, Edgefield, Lexington, and Orangeburg counties. Its name would be Aiken County.
This year, we celebrate Aiken County’s 150th anniversary (1871-2021). While celebratory plans have been modified due to pandemic concerns, there are several virtual and in-person events that will take place throughout the year. First up is a series of videos that will take viewers across several historic sites, called “Exploring Aiken County.” These videos will be posted to the 150th anniversary’s social media and YouTube channel across the month of March. In an effort to educate residents and visitors about the history of Aiken County, a small, traveling exhibit will be displayed at museums, interpretive centers, and community centers within the county.
Next up is the opening of the Aiken County Historical Museum’s refurbished Aiken County History exhibit which will take place on Thursday, May 13th from 6 pm to 8 pm. This summer, a new historical marker that recognizes the founding process of Aiken County will be unveiled at the Aiken County Government Center.
Coming up this fall are two “History Hop” dates in October. The first History Hop event will take place on Saturday, October 9th from noon to 4 pm in North Augusta, and the second History Hop will be on Saturday, October 23rd from noon to 4 pm in Aiken. During these History Hops, attendees are invited to hop on a trolley and learn about each city’s historic sites. Keep your eyes peeled for more anniversary events that will be announced throughout the year.
